Although both styles are very similar visually, single hung windows consist of a stationary upper sash, and a lower sash which can be opened and closed as usual. This functionality is slightly different from the double hung design, in which both sashes are able to move, slide, and tilt in for easy cleaning and maintenance. Many homeowners prefer the simplicity of a single hung window, as the upper sash in double hung windows is rarely used in most homes.
